Hex Hall By Rachel Hawkins

This is a review of Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins.

Description: When Sophie Mercer turned thirteen, she discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-Gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father--an elusive European warlock--only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hecate Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward prodigium, a.k.a. witches, fae, and shapeshifters. By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard. Three powerful enemies who look like supermodels; a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock; a creepy, tag-along ghost; and a new roommate, who happens to be the most-hated person and only vampire on campus. Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her friend Jenna is the number one suspect. Meanwhile, Sophie has a more personal shock to grapple with. Not only is her father the head of the prodigium council, he's the most powerful warlock in the world, and Sophie is his heir. As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all prodigium, especially her.

Review:

I've been waiting to read this book for a while now and i finally bought it last week and it arrived with in 2 days so i started reading it Friday night and finished by Saturday night. Its a short book and i could have read it in one sitting but i didn't want to finish it in a rush so i read it slower. This is meant to be a YA book but i definitely think younger teenagers could read it, it wasn't as complex as some of the YA novels i have read recently but i was still good.

The story follows Sophie, a young witch who did a love spell on prom night and it went terribly wrong so she gets sent to Hecate "Hex" hall a place for all prodigium (witches, fae and shapeshifters) who have trouble blending in. On the first day Sophie has to share a room with the only Vampire in the whole school, rejects an invitation to join a coven from the three most powerful witches in the school, and has a crush on the hottest boy in school who everyone else seems to have a crush on as well. Within a week she has also been given a term long detention with Archer. She then discovers some family secrets and that her father is the head of the council which every seemed to know except Sophie. Then there is a murder and Jenna, Sophie's vampire roommate is the prime suspect. This then leads to a few more deaths and a ghostly encounter from a family member before Sophie figures out the truth about everything and who she really is.

Okay so now characters, the main character is Sophie Mercer a young witch, who doesn't know much about her powers or even how she got them and when she goes to hex hall she discovers she doesn't know as much as she thought. Sophie is your average girl the only difference is that she is the most powerful witch in all the school. Then there's Jenna, Sophie's vampire roommate who seems to love the colour pink, but we soon see that she has some secrets of her own. There's also Elodie the most powerful dark witch in the school except from Sophie, shes a bitch to Sophie but she gets her own back, she also goes out with Archer the hottest boy in school. Elodie wants to become closer to Sophie as they all know how powerful she is and Elodie is hungry for more power. Nearer the end we see that there is some good in her. The last character I'm going to talk about is Archer, he's the boy all the girls love, and Sophie falls for him too. Sophie and Archer keep getting closer and closer, and Elodie starts getting jealous, but Archer has darker secrets then them all which is all revealed towards the end.

Altogether i enjoyed this book but i wanted it to be longer but now i have to wait till Demonglass the second book that comes out next year, which i can't wait to read. This book was good and very original i would definitely recommend it but it isn't as complex as some other YA novels are so you may sit there and want more from the book like i did but never the less i still enjoyed it and it has earned a place on my book shelf. I also found that this book is a lot funnier then most YA books so that makes it even more better. Rachel Hawkins has wrote one hell of a book and i look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Bloody Bones By Laurell K Hamilton

My review of Bloody Bones by Laurell K Hamilton.

I have just finished this book this evening and I'm still trying to decide whether i liked it or not. First of all i just want to say i was given this book by my aunt to read, therefore i hadn't read the previous 4 in the serious which is probably why i didn't like it as i didn't have a clue about what had happened previously.

So the story starts and you immediately are thrown into a whole new world without much being explained, you meet characters and your not quite sure who they are or what they have to do with the main character Anita Blake who is an animator, i didn't have a clue what that meant either until about 3 or 4 chapters in when it finally explains that its someone who raises the dead, but later in the story Anita tells us that shes a necromancer which i think they could have just told us in the first place.

Pretty much straight away Anita is sent on a business trip where she is needed to raise the dead to settle an arguement of who owns the piece of land the dead bodies are on. But then Anita is asked to go to a murder scene and see what has killed an innocent young girl, Anita gives them her theroy that its a vampire so they go out to find it but are surprised at what they actually find as Anita has never seen anything like it before so she calls in her vampire boyfriend Jean-Claude who comes down to where Anita is and they have to go see the master vampire of that area which causes a big stir with Anita and Jean-Claude. The last few chapters were ok but i think it ended too quickly and the problem was solved way to easily, the novel leads you to the ending and leaves you disappointed. To be honest i don't think i will bother reading the rest of the series as there are now currently 17 books in the series and it doesnt help to have missed the first 4.

Now i will talk about the characters, the main character is Anita Blake pretty much straight away we learn she has special powers which allow her to animate the dead, and that she is extremly powerful. I'm not sure if i liked Anita or not, sometimes i did but other times in my head i was calling her stupid. Shes also a vampire hunter but the truth is without her guns she would be pretty useless, dont get me wrong i love the whole gun thing but she should be able to used the old fashioned stakes, but she does know her stuff. She also has two boyfriends Richard and Jean-Claude. Richard is a werewolf but we only get to see him for about 3 pages throught out the whole novel. The rest of the book is all Jean-Claude who is a master vampire but also Anitas boyfriend, he is a bit weird and old fashioned but he is powerful but we soon found out that there are more powerful things out there. But altogether the best charater was Larry, a trainee animator and vampire hunter who goes along with Anita on this case. i think he was the most down to earth character who actually seemed real in the whole book. He was funny, kind and most of all, always stood by his friends and put himself in danger to save the others. There are also loads of other characters but these are the main ones.

Even after writing this im still not sure whether i liked this book or not. I think you should all know as well that the vampires and werewolfs in this book are nasty and scary creatures not like in most YA books but i will also warn you now this is an Adult book and should not be read by young teenagers. Altogther i would give this 2-3 stars and that is my honest opinion i probably didnt like it as much because i hadn't read the others, but i will definatly wont be reading anymore, as one there are too many out that i cant afford to buy them all and two i dont think i would be able to read many more.

Linger By Maggie Stiefvater

This is a Review Of Linger By Maggie Stiefvater.

Description: This is the story of a boy who used to be a wolf and a girl who was becoming one.

Just a few months ago, it was Sam who was the mythical creature. His was the disease we couldn't cure. His was the good-bye that meant the most. He had the body that was a mystery, too strange and wonderful and terrifying to comprehend.

But now it is spring. With the heat, the remaining wolves will soon be falling out of their wolf pelts and back into their human bodies. Sam stays Sam, and Cole stays Cole, and it's only me who's not firmly in my own skin.

Review:

I read shiver last year and i couldn't wait until the sequel, Linger came out so i pre ordered it, it arrived, i read it and now im reviewing it, i have to say that this is a good book, i enjoyed it but i felt that it dragged on a little bit with not a lot happening. But there were some things which made up for problem of the length, i will tell you about these in a minute.

Ok so Linger, continues where shiver finished, sam had been cured well so they thought, and Sam and Grace were still more in love then ever but Sam starts to worry about the new wolves that Beck infected, he wants to know what they are like and why Beck infected them at all. While Grace has a fever which is a lot more than just a fever and she knows what it is and so does Sam but they don't tell each other because they can't cope with saying goodbye again, i won't say anymore because i don't want to spoil it.

Grace, is still the girl we met in shiver but shes back and she is a lot more rebellious then before which is all good but she is ill but only, a few of her friends know whats happening and this would be, Sam, Cole and Isabel. Sam is still the yellow eyed cute guy that we all fell in love with, and hes even more caring in this one, and we just have to feel sorry for him when some of his past memories resurface. Then Isabel is back and she is still the bitch from before but we see her more vulnerable then before as she copes with her feelings for Cole and the death of her brother. Then there is Cole, who is the new boy, the new wolf and at first Sam is curious to why Beck would choose someone like him, but later on we find out that he was once a rock star and a druggie and he just wanted to escape form everything. And this is where we see Cole as fragile as he comes to terms with everything as he decides he does actually want a new life and hes been given one but hes been wasting it, so nearer the end he helps Sam and Grace when she is seriously ill. And then we find out he is a science genius like his father, and he has a big role in the ending, but i won't say anymore. But a Hot rockstar who is a science genius, Wow Maggie you have made a brilliant character which i think many girls will love.

Now i have just written that and actually thought about the book i have to say that i really enjoyed it and that Maggie Stiefvater has created another book which is brilliant and will be enjoyed by a lot of people, and i really can't wait to see what happens in the third and final book, Forever, which is out next year. But i really do recommend that you go out and buy Shiver (the first book) and then enjoy Linger as it is a good book and a good read but i will say that at some points in the book you may need tissues.

City Of Glass By Cassandra Clare

This is my review of City Of Glass By Cassandra Clare

Description:

To save her mother's life, Clary must travel to the City of Glass, the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters -- never mind that entering the city without permission is against the Law, and breaking the Law could mean death. To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and Simon has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight.

As Clary uncovers more about her family's past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadow-hunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadow-hunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. But can Downworlders and Shadowhunters put aside their hatred to work together? While Jace realizes exactly how much he's willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her new found powers to help save the Glass City -- whatever the cost?

Love is a mortal sin and the secrets of the past prove deadly as Clary and Jace face down Valentine in the final installment of the New York Times bestselling trilogy The Mortal Instruments.

Review: So first i had heard a lot about these books, some people loved them others hated them, while reading the previous two books (City Of Bones and City Of Ashes)i thought the series was ok but nothing special, but no matter what i did i wanted to find out what happened next, so i went and got the next book City Of Glass, and i have to say this is by far the best book in the series and i absolutely loved it. It seemed to flow a lot better then the previous two and it gave us more information and more conclusions, there were lots of twists and turns in this book which you would of never seen coming which just makes it a lot better. People who are probably saying this happens in the previous books, well it does but it just seem to flow better in this book. I honestly have to say that Clare has done a brilliant job to bring this whole new race of Shadowhunters into our world and it is fascinating to see how she does this.

Okay, so now i want to talk about characters. First of all, Clary, i absolutly love her, she is a great heroine and she is so real, and you just have to feel sorry for her in this book, she is also very fierce even though she is not trained to be a shadowhunter and definatly thinks about others before herself. The other thing that i like about her is reading about how she struggles to find out how she feels about Jace, is it love or is it just a crush that really shouldn't be happening. She also has to fight her normal life and enter the Shadow hunter world where everything is so different, to find a cure for her mother while also preparing everyone for the fight with her father Valentine. Okay, so now we will talk about Jace the hot, hot brother of Clary, well lets just say we have another arrogant bad boy who has come to steal our hearts, but its too bad for us as he too is also struggling with his feelings for Clary. But at the same time he is preparing himself to go off and kill Valentine alone. Who Next? Oh Yes, theres Clarys Best friend who just turns out to be a vampire, and he has to struggle to find someone else to be with while watching Clary and Jace struggle with there own relationship problems. While also being the only Vampire who has ever been able to walk in the sun and everyone wants a piece of him. Then there is the Lightwoods, the beautiful Isabelle who looks fragile but is fierce underneath as all the demons who she has killed know. Then theres her gay brother Alec, the adult as he likes to say, he is one of my favourite characters, he is also as fierce as his sister but he is coming to terms with his gay relationship with Magnus Bane. And Magnus Bane, i have to say that even though he is the high warlock he is absolutly hilarious.

Other all i loved this book and i definatly recommend this book, but you definatly have to read the previous two books first if not it wont make sense at all. Cassandra Clare has done a brilliant job with this book and i will definatly be reading the next one, City Of Fallen Angels which is out next year. So why dont you go buy them :D
