Clockwork Angel By Cassandra Clare

This is my review of Clockwork Angel By Cassandra Clare.

Description: Magic is dangerous—but love is more dangerous still.

When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos.

Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What's more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa's power for his own.

Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by—and torn between—two best friends: Jem, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and blue-eyed Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm's length...everyone, that is, but Tessa.

As their search draws them deep into the heart of an arcane plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world...and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.
Review:  I only finished reading Clare's Mortal Instruments series a few weeks ago so i decided to pre-order this book and i am so glad i did. This book is the prequel series to the Mortal Instruments which i really wanted to know about and i think it is a really good idea to get some of the history of the Shadowhunters which we didn't get in the Mortal Instruments. The book was delivered early hence the reason I've read it before its released over here in the UK which is out the 6th September. As soon as the book arrived i started reading it, i was fascinated by the idea that Clare had made a book about Shadowhunters in Victorian London. It was also fun to see how Clare who doesn't live in the UK describes London and i have to admit i really enjoyed it and it has made me want to learn more about Victorian England.
This book follows Tessa Gray as she travels to London to find her brother Nate, but as soon as she arrives she is kidnapped by two women who call themselves the Dark Sisters. They tell Tessa that she has a magical ability which no one has every had before, the power to change into someone else. Everyday the Dark Sisters force Tessa to use her powers so that she learns how to control it and finally when they think she is ready they prepare her to meet the Magister but it's simply not meant to be. Will comes and saves Tessa but they soon find out getting away won't be too easy. They end up fighting with the Dark Sisters and discoverer that the Dark Sisters have been keeping dead human bodies in the cellar. With the help of Henry and Thomas they manage to get away and return to the institute where Tessa finds out about the world of Shadowhunters and Downworlders and no one really knows how she fits into it all. Tessa gets to meet other Shadowhunters and gets a better idea of what they are and what they do. Will and Jem then discover an automaton, a mechanical creature who is being controlled by the mysterious Magister in the Dark Sisters house so they bring it back and Henry begins investigating it. After a few more discoveries they discover the Magister is trying to kill all Shadowhunters but he can only do this with Tessas help but what will she do? And who will she choose to save her new friends or her brother?
Characters: The main character is Tessa Gray who comes from New York and goes to London to find her brother, and in London she discovers that she has the power to transform into anyone but because of her power lots of people want her so she stays at the institute in London where she meets Shadowhunters. Will is the first Shadowhunter she meets when he rescues her from the Dark Sisters, he's rude to everyone and seems to do what he likes but his moods seem to change very often, one moment he's happy the next he acts like its the end of the world, but i have to admit at times he is very funny. Will is keeping secrets from everybody and never lets anyone get close to him except Tessa. Then there is Wills best friend Jem with his silver hair and eyes, Jem's kind and caring unlike Will, he's clever but underneath it all he has a secret which only a few know about but after a while he tells Tessa and you can't help but feel sorry for him. We know both are falling for Tessa but at the same time she is falling for Will but at the same time there's Jem who always seems to be there to cheer Tessa up. Then there is Charlotte and Henry who are in charge of the institute. Charlotte may be a small women but she makes sure she's heard and she enjoys running the institute she acts as a mother to Will, Jem, Jessamine as they are all orphans. Henry is sort of a mad scientist, he has his own laboratory in the institute where he make all sorts of inventions which go wrong most of the time. The last character I'm going to tell you about is Jessamine, she's a shadowhunter like everyone else but she doesn't think its the right life a women should have which means she's against all things to do with Shadowhunters, all she wants is a normal life. At times she really annoyed me as all she thought about was herself.
I really enjoyed this book and i think it is the best book Clare has written so far. I enjoyed this book a lot more than the Mortal Instruments series and i can't wait for the next two books of the series. I was so excited when this book arrived and it didn't disappoint. i just wanted to mention that the UK paperback is absolutely huge but the cover is one of the best i have seen this year and I'm looking forward to seeing the covers of the next two books. I loved the idea of having Shadowhunters in Victorian London and the book was one of the best i have read this year. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone as i really enjoyed it. I would give this book 5 stars and i can't wait until the next book Clockwork Prince is out next year.
For those of you who follow Cassandra Clare on twitter will know that many people have wrote to Clare saying what team they are on and i wanted to tell you what team i am on. At the start of the novel i was Team Will, then in the middle i was team Jem but at the end it was hard to choose but i find Will can be too arrogant and mean to Tessa so at the end of the book i was Team Jem.
